In Year 5 and 6 our aim is to continue to nurture and develop inquisitive, lifelong learners who grow holistically and with God as the centre of their lives.
In Upper Primary we start to look not just at our own family and community but become more aware of what is happening in the world around us. We encourage the question ‘Why and Why not?’ to spark meaning and engagement in our learning.
Year 5 and 6 students are encouraged to step up and become leaders of the Primary School through many programs such as; being paired up with students from the prep class, whole school buddy program, Alphabet Ark, School Prefects, Student Representative Council and leadership training days.
Literacy develops into world experiences and using books and connections we make from them to develop understanding and empathy for others in different situations to our own. Maths Pathways is an individualised program that caters for students individual learning path and encourages them to ‘Master’ their learning before opening up to new concepts.
Technology in the Upper Primary classroom is to used to develop independence, integrity and individuality through differentiation. Students use iPads daily to participate in the Maths Pathway program. Both Macbooks and iPads are used to create video presentations, interviews and research projects, highlighting the capacity to collaborate through Google Applications.
To consolidate their understanding of the Australian government and parliamentary system, Year 5 and 6 students make the journey to the nation’s capital, Canberra, for a week to visit a range of integral places as part of the political and legal system. These include Parliament House, National Museum, Australian Institute of Sport, Government House, War Memorial, Questacon and many more.
